UPDATE: Comedian Ralphie May's Cause of Death Revealed

TMZ reported earlier on Friday that Stand-up comedian Ralphie May had died. His publicist, Stacey Pokluda says that May had been been dealing with pneumonia and cancelled a handful of performance dates over the last month in an effort to recover. He died after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Pokluda told The Huffington Report that May’s body was discovered at his private Las Vegas Residence. “Two days ago he won the Casino Comedian of the Year at the Global Gaming Expo and had performances throughout the remainder of 2017 as part of his residency at Harrah’s Las Vegas.”

Ralphie May was born in Chattanooga, TN. He grew up in Clarksville, Arkansas. Unfortunately, May suffered from obesity for most of his life, at age 16, he was in a car accident where he broke 42 bones. His weight increased to 800 pounds after that accident.

At age 17, he won a contest to be the opening act for his idol, Sam Kinison. Kinison urged Ralphie to move to Houston, Texas to work on his comedy act. After graduating from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston May moved out to California where he got his next break, to take part on a reality competition show NBC was developing called ‘Last Comic Standing’. May came in second behind Vietnamese comedian Dat Phan, but it helped boost his career in the comedy world. Following the end of the season of ‘Last Comic’, May was booked onto the late night talk shows, including Late Night with Jay Leno.

May underwent gastric bypass In November 2003, and managed to drop a total of 350 pounds. In 2005, Ralphie took part on VH1’s ‘Celebrity Fit Club’ losing 78 lbs. of fat, 18 inches around his waist, and gained 24 lbs. in muscle. Later, he underwent four surgeries and the weight crept back on. Most recently he was back up to 400 pounds.

As word of Mays passing spread, many of his comic friends posted condolences on Twitter: of May’s comic contemporaries have expressed their grief on Twitter:

May is survived by his two children, a daughter, April June and a son, August James from his marriage to Lahna Turner.
