Shadowhunters-Season 2 Episode 4: “Day of Wrath”

On last week’s episode of Shadowhunters …

City of Bones:

Clary enters the Silent City in attempts to tell Jace, who is now locked up there, that he needs to fight for his freedom. She is also kind enough to help. He tells her to stay away or else she will be used against him, as she is his number one weakness. Furthermore, he prefers to take responsibility for his actions.

Jace has the guards take Clary away, but she returns to him in his dreams. Jace screams that she is the thing he wants the most but cannot have because she is his sister. Jace is startled awake where he realizes Hodge is in the cell next to him. Hodge informs him that the dreams are an attempt to break him, but Jace will not have any such shenanigans.

Eventually, Silent Brother Jeremiah takes Jace to Aldertree where Jace assures Aldertree he will not give in. Jace will stand strong in his convictions. Consequently, Jace faces a trial by sword with Aldertree probing him for the truth by way of the Mortal Sword. Jace flips out when he is asked about the Downworlders. Jace says The Clave is too passive with Downworlders as they run rampant and kill innocents. After severe pressure Jace confirms that he cannot fully stand with The Clave. He is sentenced to life in prison.

Valentine is psycho. That is a sentence that should be pinned to the top of every recap from here on out. Anyhow, Valentine shows up and literally kills brother Jeremiah et al and Hodge! In a not too surprising plot twist, Valentine is not in the City of Bones for Jace, per se. He is there for the Mortal Sword. Of course he offers Jace to join him. Jace declines via combat, but he is no match for Valentine who has brought Dot with him for magical advantage. Valentine flees with the special sword. Jace is free to go home.

The Streets of Brooklyn: Shadowhunters and the wolf pack is called in to assist with a body that looks to have been possessed by a demon. Luke once again makes sure to keep this crime from the mundane police. Clary has been allowed out in the field by Alec because Jace is missing. Clary is excited to learn from one of the best. She and Izzy find a demon possessed girl who has blood on her hands and has no idea what she has done. They figure she is responsible for the body. As they search for the demon, Izzy tells Clary she should not go to Idris but she should appreciate a mom who cares about her. The Institute: Aldertree is scheduled to punish Magnus for helping Alec out of the Institute, but not before he handles his Jace problem. Meanwhile, Clary is her usual snarky self to Jocelyn who inquires about Jace’s status. Jocelyn reveals she is being sent to Idris and would like Clary to accompany her. Eventually, despite her new found Izzy inspired deep appreciation of her mother, Clary says no, because she needs to learn Shadowhunter life and be closer to her friends in New York. However, Luke was all aboard to leave everything behind despite Jocelyn thinking it was too much to ask of him. Life goes on as usual in The Institute except the body they bought back from the streets. A cloud of black smoke leaves the lifeless form and filters its way through the Clave using unsuspected hosts to do serious damage. Eventually, the smoke makes its way to the inner crew causing Aldertree’s boy Raj to attack Lydia. Then Clary finds Alec with blood on his hands. He says words similar to the possessed girl they found near the dead body while in the field. The smoke demon got him! Guess who was its target??? Jocelyn! Jocelyn?! How can this be?! Clary is devastated. Just when things were getting better between them, she finds Jocelyn dead. This is a huge loss considering Jocelyn is about the only formidable opponent Valentine has and frankly the only one around with common sense. R.I.P Mama Clary, the original upworld stunter! In the aftermath of discovery, Alec tries to apologize but Clary has no time. She has a demon to kill. Too bad the demon is in Izzy who she is forced to stab in the back because Izzy has attacked Alec. The demon flees. Clary kills it and sends it back to the depths it came from. Magnus’ Lair: Raphael arrives at Magnus’ house in peril after his meeting with Aldertree. Raphael has been tortured with a laser beam emulating the power of the sun. This is totally illegal, but at this point we expect very little from Aldetree in regards being fair. Aldatree’s motivation for harm Raphael lies in is his desire to imprison Camille Belcourt, former Vampire leader. Raphael explains this to Magnus right around the time Simon shows up. Of course, there is tension between those two because Raphael went too far in threatening Simon’s mother. Raphael calls Simon dumb because the box Simon retrieved from Agra is Camille’s grave dirt which can summon her at any time with a drop of her blood. Simon has exactly that because she is his sire. They prepare to summon Camille. Magnus shares to Simon his concerns. Camille is his one true love or something close to that. Camille saved him when no one else cared. He has allegiance to her because of this one event. However, Magnus does not appreciate how she had treated Raphael and other Downworlder that he has taken under his wing. This is news to us, but apparently Magnus and Raphael are close. Magnus sends Raphael and Simon on a dummy mission while he summons Camille alone. They have a heart to heart where she basically attempts to manipulate him from sending her to Aldertree by saying she is the only one who will always be there. He resists and sends her away. Magnus passes a personal test we had no idea he was taking. Back at the Institute: Coincidentally, Simon gets Clary call to return to the Insititue around the time she disovered her Jocelyn’s murder. Jace arrives back at the Clave slightly before Simon. He sees Clary but runs to Izzy who is receiving a healing rune from Alec. They are his true family. They are the only siblings he knows. Clary is left to fall down but not before Simon swoops in to catch her. Jace turns to her but sees that he has no place by her side. He goes with Alec and Izzy instead. Clary suddenly realizes she is all alone in the Shadowhunter world. At least she has her childhood bestie. How will Jocelyn’s death impact Clary and the entire Shadow World? Let us know in the comments section. Stay tuned for the next episode, “Dust Shadows” airing tonight Monday, January 30, 2017 8p ET on Freeform Recap by Nat P.
