Social media was the bearer of bad news for Michelle Kwan. The Olympic figure skater says that she learned Clay Pell, her husband of four years, had filed for divorce in a tweet and a Daily News article published March 29.
Court documents, filed March 30, reportedly read:
“Plaintiff initially learned that the Defendant had filed for divorce in California by means of a ‘Tweet’ on March 29, 2017 and shortly thereafter from the online copy of an article published in the New York Daily News.”
Michelle is looking to have the California case dismissed and moved to Rhode Island, where the former couple lived together and Kwan is a registered voter.
The pair was in the process of remodeling their home in Newport, R.I., and Michelle requested a court order for Clay to remove his belongings from the shared home.
The documents also reveal the pair have not lived together since November, when they first began discussing a divorce. In the months since November, Michelle has been staying at a motel in Newport.
Michelle & Clay married in 2013 in the Ocean State.
