The larger-than-life powerhouse of a movie producer and co-founder of The Weinstein Company, Harvey Weinstein, was been ousted by his Board of Directors this past Sunday October 8th 2017. At first, he was merely taking a self-imposed hiatus, but that has been parlayed into his actual firing. This comes after the NY Times exposed “numerous incidents of alleged sexual harassment by the media mogul over a period of three decades”. (Source: Lisa Respers France, CNN, Mon Oct 9th 2017)
If you don’t know Weinstein by his name, you will know his many blockbuster movies. He and his movie-house are responsible for “Django Unchained”, “Shakespeare in Love”, “Gangs of New York”, “The King’s Speech”, and many more.
Many Hollywood elite have come out both in shock and disbelief, but NOT defense of, Mr. Weinstein. Those to express their outrage have been Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Judi Dench, Susan Sarandon, Mark Ruffalo, Rose McGowan and Ashley Judd; with Judd and McGowan being recipients of the alleged-abuses.
Once originally defending him, Lisa Bloom has been reported to have quit her affiliation with Mr. Weinstein. She is the daughter of famed attorney Gloria Allred and well-known in her own right for championing and defending women’s causes and other civil rights matters.
Weinstein has offered an excuse, albeit a flimsy one. He is quoted as saying “I came of age in the 60’s and 70’s, when all the rules about behavior and workplaces were different,” and “That was the culture then. I have since learned it’s not an excuse, in the office—or out of it.” (CNN/Hollywood)
Well, I think we can all agree that we are grateful this Hollywood secret has been brought to light. It has been suggested that the “boys club” mentality of Hollywood (and general society) won’t subside until the men stand up and take notice, with their words and then backed with action. We are thankful to those who have the courage to speak out; and we will wait patiently (or not so patiently) for the others to do as well.
