Charlie Murphy, comedian, actor, writer, and older brother of comedian/actor Eddie Murphy died on Wednesday. His death, from leukemia, came as a shock to family, friends, and industry insiders. Charlie suffered from leukemia and had been receiving chemotherapy to battle the disease. He was only 57.
Charles Quinton Murphy, better known as known as Charlie was born in July 1959, the eldest son of Lillian and Charles Edward Murphy in Brooklyn, NY. Charlie’s youth was spent making bad decisions and running with the wrong crowd netting him 10 months in jail. After his release from incarceration, Murphy enlisted in the U.S. navy for a six-year stint.
He caught the entertainment bug, but resented that throughout his career, he was known as Eddie Murphy’s older brother. It probably didn’t help that his first notable movie was Eddie’s ‘Harlem Nights’. His break and singular recognition came when he starred in the movie CB4 with fellow comic, Chris Rock. He also had roles in King’s Ransom with Anthony Anderson. But he became truly famous in his own right after appearing and writing for Comedy Central’s ‘Chappelle’s Show’, writing sketches for the show’s star, Dave Chappelle. Most notable of these sketches had Chappelle portraying Prince and Rick James.
In 2010, Murphy had his own Comedy Central special, Charlie Murphy: I Will Not Apologize. And has guest starred or had recurring roles on TV shows: Ice Cube’s ‘Are We There Yet’, ‘Martin’, and ‘Hawaii Five-O’ and Adult Swim’s ‘Black Jesus’.
Murphy also kept busy doing voice over work for Saturday morning cartoons like ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ and ‘The Boondocks’. He also voices Jizzy Z in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. His latest work can be seen on the Caleb network Starz series, ‘Power’.
Charlie is preceded in death by his father, stepfather, Vernon Lynch, and his wife Tisha Taylor Murphy, who died of cervical cancer in 2009. He leaves to mourn his passing brother Eddie, half-brother, Vernon Jr., mother Lillian, and three children.
RIP CHARLIE MURPHY!
