With ‘Big Brother Season 19’ just over a month away we can expect surprises on surprises. After all we have been trained to “expect the unexpected”. So here are 15 of the biggest twists to ever happen on ‘Big Brother.’
1. Double Eviction
During Season 5 the show’s producers introduced the Double Eviction twist, which meant the Houseguests would experience a week’s worth of Big Brother competitions during one live broadcast, resulting in a second eviction.
2. America’s Player
Viewers got more involved in Season 8 when America’s Player, Eric Stein, was introduced. Each week, Eric was given tasks to accomplish that would earn him extra money.
3. Team America
Team America was kind of like America’s Player, but instead of 1 player there were 3! In Season 16, Frankie Grande, Donny Thompson, and Derrick Levasseur formed this “alliance” and, collectively, worked to perform secret tasks to win money.
4. Power of Veto
The Power of Veto in the house always now, but that wasn’t always the case; instead, the coveted prize was introduced in Big Brother, Season 3.
5. The Coup d’Etat
In Season 7 we learned about the Coup d’Etat, which was a tool that gave one Houseguest the power to knock the Head of Household’s nominees off the block, back to safety, and replace them with nominees of their own. In Season 11, Jeff Schroeder used the Coup d’Etat to nominate power players Jessie Godderz and Natalie Martinez, which resulted in Jessie’s eviction.
6. Battle of the Block
Introduced in Season 16, the Battle of the Block allowed two Heads of Household to nominate two Houseguests for eviction. Then, each nominee would compete, in teams, for safety. The losing team was forced to compete for the Power of Veto. The HoH who nominated the loosing Houseguests would be stripped of their power.
7. ‘Til Death Do Us Part
Season 9 started with a romantic twist when Houseguests were matched with their “soulmates.” Not only would they sleep in the same bed and compete together, the couples would also be eliminated together. A few showmances sparked and a few relationships were kept secret. The twist wrapped up in the third week.
8. Twin Twist
The twin twist was seen for the first time in Season 5. Only one twin would be in the house at a time and they two would switch whenever Big Brother told them to switch. If the twins could keep their secret safe, or rely on alliances to keep them in the game, until week five then both twins are able to enter the house and play the game as individuals.
The first big competition of Season 11 brought the Houseguests back to high school when they were divided up into teams reminiscent of various teenage cliques – Athletes, Brains, Popular, and Offbeat – each crew competed for a chance to bring in an additional Houseguest from a previous season.
10. The X Factor
Season 4 had a twist that was particularly intense, 10 out of the 13 Houseguests unsuspectingly were brought face to face (and forced to compete) with their exes inside the Big Brother house.
11. Dynamic Duos
Once the Houseguests on Season 13 thought they had things figured out, Big Brother told them that three pairs of power players from previous seasons (Jeff Schroeder and Jordan Lloyd, Brendon Villegas and Rachel Reilly, and Dick and Daniele Donato) were entering the house to give the newbies a run for their money.
12. Pandora’s Box
Introduced during Season 11, Pandora’s Box gave the Head of Household an opportunity to win additional cash and prizes; plus, they could subject the other Houseguests to punishments. But there was a catch! Some HoHs were unlucky and pulled out their own punishments from Pandora’s Box, which allowed the other Houseguests to enjoy perks.
During Season 14, the Houseguests were divided into teams and former HGs, Mike “Boogie” Malin, Janelle Piezina, Britney Haynes, and Dan Gheesling were invited back to lead them to the grand prize.
Season 8 brought 3 “duos” of Houseguests with pre-house history into the house. For example, father and daughter Dick and Daniele Donato dealt with past family issues while also competing for the big win.
15. Secret Pairs
When Houseguests entered the Big Brother house for Season 6, they all knew they had a secret ally in the game. Initially, each duo thought they were the only set of partners in the house, but it didn’t take long for the secret to get out.
