Before Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2 became huge hits, there was MTV’s “16 and Pregnant”, where we were introduced to the Teen Mom ladies. “16 and Pregnant” premiered in 2009, with the first season introducing us to the ladies that would end up on “Teen Mom”, Maci Bookout, Catelynn Lowell, Amber Portwood and Farrah Abraham. The following year, the show’s second season introduced us to the ladies that would go on to do “Teen Mom 2”, Jenelle Evans, Chelsea Houska, Leah Messer, and Kailyn Lowry. Many other young teenage mothers appeared on “16 and Pregnant” but their episodes were “one-and-done” and after 5 seasons, we have not seen or heard about the show since. It seemed like as the Teen Mom franchise grew in popularity, the less of “16 and Pregnant” we saw and many have wondered if MTV will ever bring it back.
According to Starcasm, MTV is currently filming a new season of “16 and Pregnant” in Cumberland County in south New Jersey. Although the show is getting a reboot, it is not clear exactly how similar it will be to the original series. In January 2015, head of MTV programming Susanne Daniels reportedly stated, “We are retooling 16 and Pregnant. We decided to try something new. 16 and Pregnant was stand-alone episodes [in the past] and we are going to use the Teen Mom format for 16 and Pregnant this season.”
In addition to the reboot resembling Teen Mom more, as it will follow the same group of women, it differs in that all of the new stars reside in Jersey, as opposed to being spread out over the country. Producers believe that the success of the Teen Mom franchise is related to the serialized format, making viewers more likely to watch because they have been following the stories and want to know what happens next in the lives of the stars. Daniels also stated, “We find that the Teen Mom ratings build over the course of the season as people get invested, so we thought, ‘Lets just look at that with 16 and Pregnant and see how it goes.’”
MTV will surely have success with the new reboot but if for some reason, it is not as popular as expected, there will still be Teen Mom for a while. The newest season of Teen Mom 2, which premiered last week on July 17th, added a fifth cast member, Briana DeJesus. Also, on the same day, MTV began showing a UK-based “Teen Mum” in the United States, showing three new young mothers navigate their new lives parenting and a fourth expectant mother who gave birth while filming.
